Tony Crosbie

Incident Type - Hit and Run

Date of incident - 06/09/07

Time - 11.20am

Location - Burham, Nr Maidstone, Kent

On a sunny, dry day Tony Crosbie and a colleague, were crossing a quiet country road, when Tony was involved in a very serious hit and run accident. Tony was knocked off balance by the car with such force that he actually landed on the roof, and, incredibly, was carried along for 50ft. He then rolled off the roof onto the road and, to add insult to injury, as the driver drove off he ran over Tony's wrist and broke it.

Tony's colleague immediately called for the emergency services. The land ambulance was first on the scene, closely followed by the Kent Air Ambulance who arrived within 5 minutes of receiving the call. Tony suffered horrendous injuries; a broken right leg, a broken pelvis, 3 broken ribs, a punctured lung, a broken shoulder blade, 2 broken bones in his neck, a laceration in the forehead, 2 broken teeth, as well as countless cuts and bruises.

The Kent Air Ambulance treated Tony at the scene and then flew him to the Royal London Hospital. Tony was rushed into theatre for surgery on his leg. Tony stayed in London for a week before being transferred to Medway Hospital for rehabilitation. Two weeks later, he was allowed home.

Tony's leg was removed from plaster on 18 January 2008 and he now walks with a stick as his leg is not fully weight bearing. His doctor believes it may take 9-12 months for his leg to heal satisfactorily. Tony hopes to return to work sometime in the middle of 2008.

We were delighted to meet up with Tony and he had this to say about the Kent Air Ambulance: 'they are fantastic. I hope you never need them, but with continued support they will be there if you do. They provide an excellent service. With the amount of blood I lost, I have been told that they saved my life and for that I shall always be grateful'.
